My own (subjective) experience has been that it takes 15-20 minutes under
'average' conditions to stabilize pitch throughout the full range of the
horn. Of course a colder horn will take longer, as will a colder room, etc.
What I've found interesting (and I didn't really notice it until after
playing for years - probably was not patient enough to care as a kid!) is
that some sections of the horn seem to stabilize before others. On my R13 A
clarinet the part of the horn that seems to always be the last to come up to
pitch is the upper chalumeau. It is less noticeable on the B flat horn. So
warming up only until a certain note is "on pitch", (or installing a shorter
barrel on the horn to achieve a pitch) is not necessarily a substitute for a
good warm-up. I'm sure each horn is unique to some degree - that is just my
experience with my current instruments.
