This increase in mouthpiece bore size has been going on for many
decades. Now most mouthpieces terminate close or at 15.0 mm, where the
average clarinet bore at the top of the lower joint is 14.76 to 14.83.
Hence the need for shorter barrels and/or the Moennig style taper now
used in almost all aftermarket barrels.

Why has this happened? Because we like the sound of the larger bore
mouthpieces, with their bigger and darker sound.
