Fred...

It has been my experience that the mouthpiece will sometimes make a huge
difference in in pitch on different clarinets. On my current clarinets, I
am using Backun "Traditional" mouthpieces. I have a Lomax "Classic" that
makes them very sharp. I also have a Backun wooden "Traditional" that
makes them flat. So try some different mouthpieces until something strikes
a balance for you. Different reeds can make a slight difference, too. Try
to stay with the original barrel length. It seems to avoid pitch problems
elsewhere. And I have NOT found that barrels without rings are prone to
cracking. The ring is not a crack preventer. It is there to protect from
human clumsiness! Clarinets without metal rings have a nicer, clearer
sound, IMHO.

I have a 1963 Evette and Schaeffer clarinet (my first) that plays
beautifully with its original barrel and bell, a Backun Moba mouthpiece, #3
Rico Reserve "Classic" reeds, and a BG "Super Revelation" ligature. I have
put many different Backun barrels and bells on it, but they don't really
make a difference. It's case is a bit beaten up, but the clarinet has been
re-plated in silver, padded with Valentino pads, and looks and plays like a
new Buffet R-13. Hope this helps.
