In case of any confusion, this is not the same firm as Wurlitzer
organs/jukeboxes. I think there is a family connection a few hundred years
ago, but the clarinet makers are entirely separate.

They don't consider a clarinet to be really finished until this final bore
polish/retuning. I had this done on my original Wurlitzers, and it made
great instruments even better. Sadly, they were stolen last year, and I now
have to break in another pair ... but they may be even better.

I also have a Fritz Wurlitzer bass from about 1950, which is in beautiful
condition.

When a Wurlitzer is first made, they put a lacquer coating on the bore.
This flakes off gradually as the player breaks the instrument in. After
about a year, the instrument is sent back to Neustadt/Aisch, Germany to the
Wurlitzer shop where they do the final bore polishing.

Here is a picture and description:

Because of this, the bore remains very stable, oftentimes for decades (my
Wurlitzers were made by Fritz Wurlitzer in 1951: they still play
beautifully).

This might be what your student was doing, though I'm not sure.

All the best,

Eric
