Being a nut for musicals, we have a season subscription to the "Best of
Broadway" series here in Portland, which gives me a chance to see the
national tours that you East Coasters can see on Broadway. I always go
down to take inventory of the pit for these shows. I have certainly
noticed how many shows have gone to just a few winds backed by a host of
synthesizers.
On the plus side, we saw West Side Story last week, and the pit
orchestra was relatively large. I counted four reeds, three strings,
five brass, two percussion, and three keyboards. Unfortunately,
although I fully acknowledge that Bernstein's music is complicated, the
orchestra had a lot more trouble than I would have expected.
Maria and Anita were absolutely wonderful. Tony, not so much.
