Hi Oliver,
I used to use MMO, then later made my own cassettes for pupils with the accompaniment on on channel and the solo on the other; I used the old Tascam 4 track recorder to make a master file first then transferred it as above. It was rather Lo-Fi, but my pupils could fade out the solo part by using the LR channel controls, and found it useful. Then I purchased Finale and as that became more sophisticated I recorded for my pupils with its aid.
By the time I retired I was producing MMO type CD's with a far more realistic sound.
With the latest Finale, "humanised" performances and the "Garritan" Orchestra it has become possible to produce CD's of my own compositions that really do sound like live recordings; even good enough to deceive other musicians. At last I can hear what my works really should sound like.
My daughter in law, who is a professional composer , mostly for children, does the same, only via Sibelius. ( She sings in the vocal lines too.
I imagine you must do this kind of thing yourself, but if you haven't tried Finale with Garritan please do, I am sure you will enjoy it.
Regards,
Martin

It is true that a really good MIDI file is stunning, though I wouldn't go so far to say that one couldn't distinguish it from live players.
As I said, to each his/her own. I wouldn't switch from playing along with MIDI files, as they are eminently versatile. Indeed, one can't find most of the works on my page in MMO format (with live players), certainly not where any two or more instruments are absent.
