Subj: [kl] Cleaning wooden clarinets

Santa Claus is going to bring me a couple of new clarinet cases(Bb and
bass) . One of the current cases is about 45 years old and has a
definite musty smell. The other case seems OK but it is probably at
least sixty years old.

Both clarinets have been regularly serviced for the past ten years and
seem to be in good shape. I have a mixture of cork and leather pads.

I would hate to transfer mould (or any other contaminants) from the old
cases to the new ones. I will oil the clarinets. I will launder
swabs. I will throw out any used cane-reeds. Synthetic reeds and
mouthpieces will be swished in hydrogen peroxide. Is there anything
else I can do that will kill mould without damaging the clarinets?

I have had a chronic cough for the past few years. I'm getting a little
desperate to get rid of it. With new cases, I hope to eliminate
clarinet-mould as a possible cause.

Cheers,
Wayne Hajas
