Hello Gary,

Schlegel is the regular German word for a mallet. It is indeed derived from "schlagen" (to beat) and sometimes spelled Schlaegel. Poultry legs ("drumsticks") are also referred to as Schlegel and sometimes even a leg of mutton. I hope this is what the score calls for.
