When Buffet first came out with these teflon extensions, we started getting
a rash of broken keys in the shop for repair. Seeing a possible problem, I
"bit the bullet" and made about 2 dozen replacement tips from stainless
steel, so that I didn't have to stop and make just one set every time one
came into the shop. My replacement extensions were such that I could drill
out the remaining Teflon in the lever and slip the sculpted replacement tip
into the hole, soft-soldering them into place. When silencing these metal
side levers, I use a small square piece of a bladder pad skin (gold beater's
skin)covering the extension. This material works well, and is very strong
and stable.

I thought that Tom was referring to the Left Hand levers for the E/B and
F#/C# keys: that he removed the little Teflon pieces that Buffet tried using
for a while as a replacement for the metal ones, which required fish skin
(or a synthetic replacement, never cigarette paper) to silence. I guess the
problem was that the Teflon pieces broke too easily....
