If I remember correctly, the clarinet IV part is the "main" Eb part and cou=
ld be considered as "Eb clarinet I" even =

though it's not labeled as such. There is only a little bit of Eb on the c=
larinet III part. Where the two parts have an =

Eb clarinet duet, the clarinet III part has the lead, but I believe it's co=
mmon for the clarinet III and IV players to =

trade parts there so that the clarinet IV player is always the lead Eb clar=
inet.

So doubling that part would give a lot more Eb power (since Ebs aren't powe=
rful enough by themselves for Mahler's =

taste?).
