Hi everyone,
=A0
I own one of the A basses Keith refers to (btw his recent article in the cl=
arinet magazine on the A bass is fantastic and as comprehensive a report as=
I've seen). I have used both A and Bb basses in the same show. Steve Fox d=
id a number of alterations to my A to give me a more fighting chance of an =
in-tune scale, but the Wagner Liebestod slow solo that starts the second pa=
rt is in the throat-tones, and I had a Bb part as a backup in case of pitch=
issue to the strings. I tried both in rehearsal (the pitch was fine althou=
gh a little different between the instruments), and I was very pleased when=
=A0the conductor said he preferred the sound of the A and=A0wanted to keep=
=A0it. Then it was on to Bernstein West Side Story and Bb bass, kind of fun=
to have both onstage at the same time. The orchestra covered a rental car =
thank goodness, you don't want to try shifting that much weight on and off =
transit!
