In Mahler's 2nd, the 4th Bb clarinetist also serves as the 2nd Eb
clarinetist. The Eb (5th) only plays the Eb clarinet.

I saw the Rochester Philharmonic play Mahler 2 earlier this year. There were
5 clarinetists for that piece! 1st/2nd on clarinet, 3rd on clarinet/bass,
and 4th/5th on clarinet/Eb (not sure Bb/A for the regular clarinet parts).
It was a massive orchestration (over 100 players plus the chorus). I can't
imagine what it cost for all that (2 performances + however many
rehearsals). I heard they may be playing another Mahler symphony later this
year (not sure which one). The new music director sure is making an
impression!
