I saw the Rochester Philharmonic play Mahler 2 earlier this year. There wer=
e 5 clarinetists for that piece! 1st/2nd on clarinet, 3rd on clarinet/bass,=
and 4th/5th on clarinet/Eb (not sure Bb/A for the regular clarinet parts).=
It was a massive orchestration (over 100 players plus the chorus). I can't=
imagine what it cost for all that (2 performances + however many rehearsal=
s). I heard they may be playing another Mahler symphony later this year (no=
t sure which one). The new music director sure is making an impression!
