I hope this helps a bit. Specifically to Universal Judgment, my memory
fails. Of course, that was when I was in 8th grade in 1951, plus I was
doubling the bass clarinet. However, I do remember on other pieces through
the years that if I had that marking in woodwinds, and the option was
available, I'd have the clarinets "trill" between two different notes. For
example, if 2nd clar. had the trem. on D and 3rd had the trem. on F, I'd
essentially have them play a trill between D and F (or between F and D on
3rd. I never had an adjudicator call me on it. I _think_ I got the
original idea from a flautist on faculty.

(I was only doubling the bass clarinet that season because the young lady
who normally played it was "indisposed" for a few months during that
period.)
