As more and more of us are confronted by YouTube offerings of our performances (surprise!) made by amateur camcordists, has anyone on this list tried any strategy of intervention which would be effective in discouraging "unauthorized" uploads to YouTube, and has it worked?

My only ideas are announcements to the audience that "although camcorder operators have the freedom to upload anything they want, we request that an upload not be made until it can be reviewed by the performers", or, alternatively, "We have our own professional video and audio engineers on site for an official recording of this concert and eventual upload of selected pieces to YouTube; we request that you not upload your amateur version because it may not be complimentary to this group," Or possibly, even "This performance is copyrighted and may not be uploaded to YouTube without the permission of the conductor." Maybe it is an impossible dream. What do the rest of you think?

Without commenting on Kathy's artistic presentation, on that of her pianist, on the technical aspects of the acoustics of the hall or the microphone placement for balance or on the composition of the photos she used for the two offerings, let me present, as a case in point, one of my own performances with a group, not as the first clarinetist, I am happy to say in this case, , but with warts and all:

At this writing, the first link has had 34 views and the second 14. Thank goodness! It doesn't say a lot about the quality of the camp. It isn't flattering.

For better or for worse, all uploads of a piece are going to be compared with each other and it seems to me that we ought to start exercising some professional judgment on how the world sees us. Consider the same piece done at the California Music Educators Association Conference last February or March, with 15,717 hits as of this writing. The video was done with a single camera, probably using the camcorder
microphone, but everything seems to work splendidly. The camcordist and
the musicians can be proud of the result, in my opinion:

Most of us on the list can't hope for a 3- or possible 4- camera setup and engineer making the cuts on the fly and balanced microphones skillfully placed, like that enjoyed by the Quintessence Saxophone Quintet, with, at this writing, 117,991 hits:

As you might guess, I'm a little spooked by an upcoming concert which may turn out to be a bomb and, if so, I'd like to figure out a way to keep it off YouTube. Maybe 14 or 15 hits accomplishes the same objective. Any ideas?

Oliver
