Another way of getting at a similar result is to give each clarinet
part a pair of notes to play derived from adjacent clarinet parts. If
each player is shifting between two notes that are part of the harmony
of the moment, it adds up to give a sense of activity within a
stationary chord that a string tremulo carries.
