Yamaha plastic clarinets can be made to play very well in tune, but not with any brand of barrel that is only 64mm in length. I have found that Yamaha plastics need between 1 and 1.5mm pull when using the original stock 66mm barrel. A second mistake would be to do those very large pulls at the barrel and middle joint without using tuning rings to eliminate the turbulence and added displacement such large pulls introduce.

I have no knowledge of the M13 series Vandoren mounthpieces. I have had very bad tuning experiences with other Vandoren mouthpieces, such as the B45.

While student instruments are usually patterned after professional models, the top of the upper main joint on most brands of student clarinets are usually cut about 2mm short so that beginners and sections of beginning players with underdeveloped embouchures, soft reeds and lack of breath support don't end up being very flat to the rest of the beginning band, which is usually playing very sharp.

I'm guessing that the person with the Yamaha clarinet probably needs to shop harder for a better repair tech. From what you've said, it doesn't seem like the work just done was done by a person who really understands clarinets.

A leak pretty much anywhere will affect the long B. First guess would be
the C key, held down by the B. The crowfoot adjustment is critical, but

Yamaha makes one of the better student clarinets. Don't be so quick to
blame the instrument just because it is not a pro wood Buffet.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
