Subj: [kl] Mouthpiece comparison, intonation, and leaks

The new clarinetist in one of the community orchestras I play in has a "Woo=
dwind" mouthpiece on her clarinet. Is it a decent mouthpiece? We did some e=
xperimenting=A0because her throat tones are so sharp, they show up on a tun=
er as a flat half-step up (meaning she played throat A, which would show up=
as a G on a tuner; it registered as a flat G#). I let her try my Vandoren =
5RV (series 13) which did bring down the throat at least to a sharp version=
of the correct note. I know that the 5RV being a series 13 will bring the =
pitch down some. She hasn't played in a long time, so I expected flat inton=
ation=A0if anything. She said she uses a #3 reed, but I never did ask her w=
hat brand it was (whoops, that's important).
=A0
I also play-tested her clarinet with my barrel and mouthpiece (Chadash 64mm=
and Vandoren M13 series 13) because her=A0B above the staff=A0would only p=
lay if you played up to it, as opposed to just starting on that note. I'm t=
hinking a leak in the LH 1st finger pad? She just had some pad work done, s=
o she's going to take it back to where she got it done. That pad looked a l=
ittle frayed, so that was my first thought. Would a leak in the throat A pa=
d do that, too? It looked like it might have been leaking, but our break ra=
n out and I didn't have time to actually check it. Hopefully whoever fixed =
her clarinet will pick that stuff up (I also gave her the card of the tech =
I use).
=A0
Her clarinet is a plastic Yamaha (not sure which number). I'm aware my barr=
el is short, but I probably had it pulled out 3mm or 4mm (plus=A01mm or 2mm=
in the middle)=A0to get the horn in tune. The barrel she has is whatever c=
ame with=A0her clarinet=A0(I'm assuming longer than mine, but I didn't chec=
k to see how much). She said she may be interested in just getting another =
clarinet. Assuming her Yamaha is a student one, what would be a good one fo=
r her to step-up to?
=A0
Thanks for any info,
=A0
Rachel
