I made one myself, though I would call myself a competent repairman. You can
get rod the right diameter from ebay (you have to measure carefully),
preferably stainless steel, and also rubber slip-on ends if you do not want
to turn and thread.

If having one made, I suggest you get the end turned to the diameter of the
fixing for about 4", then leave the rest at larger diameter for stiffness.
In my case it was a 6 mm hole and end section, and an 8 mm rod thereafter.

You won't get a lot of change out of $100. Parts are about $40-$50
(stainless steel and the cello ball) and it's maybe an hour's work. See what
your local garage charges per hour and reckon that Steve is worth at least
twice that!

You do not want a standard length. Individuals vary in height by about 2
feet, thus so will the pegs. Measure the length that you want by supporting
the instrument on e.g. a pile of books, then measure the height of the peg
clamp. Allow say 2" more for adjustment ... more if you sometimes play in
high heels ... and that is the length that you want.

Shannon,

I had one made by a friend who is a fine repairman. A competent
repairman ought to be able to find you a rod the same diameter as the
peg you already have. I would be surprised if 2 feet of metal plus a
non-slip 'foot' would cost $100, but if it did, it's money well spent. I
have played my Bass standing next to the soprano in the Argento "To Be
Sung Upon the Water".
