Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2011 13:39:19 -0400

-----Original Message-----
From: Vodnoy, Robert <Robert.Vodnoy(at) northern.edu>
I'm looking for a pops piece for solo clarinet and orchestra to be a
companion piece to the Weber Concertino for my soloist on a November
concert.
-------
Publishing details have been added to the titles suggested. Hope this makes
it easier for conductors to buy/rent these works.
Please suggest other titles, with details, that would fit this category.

>Otherwise there is another work I would recommend, but it's a devil of a
work for both the soloist and the orchestra. It's called Revue by Alex
North, which was commissioned by Benny Goodman back in 1945. This work,
which lasts about 16 minutes, is in three movements >and calls for a full
orchestra. It was premiered by Goodman with Leonard Bernstein conducting the
New York City Symphony in 1946, and the first European performance was with
Reginald Kell and the (Royal) Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra in the early
1950s. The last known performance with orchestra was with myself conducting
the Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra back in November of 1987 with Keith
Soltys as soloist. I believe G. Schirmer has the score and parts in their
catalogue.

>For those familiar with North's music for A Streetcar Named Desire, or any

heartily not only recommend it, but wish that more of North's concert music
(which includes his bold second symphony based on his TV documentary score
Africa) would make the rounds.

Try Adolf Schreiner's "Immer kleiner" in which the soloist takes off first
the bell, then the lower joint, etc. -- all the while continuing to play.
S/he ends up squealing on the mouthpiece. (We had a liveried butler with a
felt-lined tray standing there to receive the disassembled pieces.) The
audience loves it.
