Peter, the way to fix this is either
1. If they are rod screws, swage the end of the shoulders of the tubes to
extend them, keeping a rod in the hole so they don't shrink. Clean out the
hole with a drill, square off the end to the right length.
2. If they are pivot screws, ream out the socket into which they fit so that
they sink deeper.

You need a (hand) swager and drill for (1) and the right size reamer for
(2).

Your advice is very sound. As to my problem the rods are screwed up tight.
The shoulders of the keys are not a snug fit between the pillars. Shimming
would be difficult - I think the instrument is basically "clapped out" to
use the technical term. However I can still get some fun out of it.....
