The Dan Leeson lecture/recital at UNLV, July or 2006 was a great treat. The=
entire effort was more than just the evening
concert. =

After a week at Kammermusik Workshops, Dan, Keith and I traveled to Las Veg=
as. (No...not to gawk at show girls and eat
pizza.) ;-) We had a full day of work ahead of us. =

The day started with a master class with Dan at the helm. We discussed all =
things Mozart/clarinet. The entire clarinet
studio was in attendance (plus many other students and faculty). We fielded=
many questions about clarinet...and
especially about basset horn. After all, two of the most beautiful basset h=
orns in the world were sitting in the room.
(real furniture!) After the master class we took a break for lunch and afte=
r lunch we met in the recital hall on campus
for a rehearsal. This recital was to be a collaborative effort with student=
s attending UNLV.

The recital was fascinating. Dan had developed a program full of Mozart's m=
usic for basset horn. What made it so
interesting was how he put it together. The program included completed work=
s like the K411 example, works with voice,
instrumental only, an excerpt from a Mozart opera and an interesting sectio=
n discussing fragments and then examples of
completions of fragments by several composers of note...(or Mozart experts =
testing their compositional skills).

While the musical sections of the tapes are fine, the speech sections are v=
ery difficult to understand. The better your
sound system....the better shot you have at hearing all Dan said. I have tw=
o more 20 minute tapes to split and post.
I'll get to those in the next day or so. Here's another completed section f=
rom the video edits, with Keith Bowen
performing the basset horn obbligato from Non pi=F9 di fiori, Vitellia's ar=
ia from La Clemenza di Tito, with soprano and
piano. Both the soprano and pianist were students at UNLV. Their names are =
listed in the description section of the
video. All did a very, very fine job!

Here's the link...
