I am usually in the far left-hand corner of Special Collections, if not in
microfilms where the equipment is extremely temperamental and noisy, or in
printing where one needs a passwords, an account with money in it, and the
equipment takes your money on a whim without doing anything in return and
one has to negotiate a hard-won refund. My six digit ticket is valid until
2014, but overnight stays are not encouraged. Coffee and sandwich on
the terrace under the gaze of Punch when the weather permits.

I am such a shady character. I remember a member of the clerical staff
recording the weight of an RVW manuscript (the Quintet for wind, strings
and piano, now published, after speaking to Ursula on phone, to push the
boat out) before handing it over in case I had brought the kitchen scissors.
It could only be examined under supervision. I handed it back so close to
closing time that they could not be bothered to weigh it again, so the whole
exercise was a waste of time.
