Hi all! Thanks for all suggestions! I know Crussell and Krommer, but not th=
eir 5tets. Someone should try the 5tet by Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912). He =
was an afro-british composer, conductor and professor, who made tours to th=
e United States, and used both indian and african melodies in his works. He=
died young of pneumonia. I know a little of frensh-german Henri Marteau (1=
874-1924) and have just reheard his 5tet (Naxos, 8.551208 ?) with Klaus Ham=
pl and Quartetto di Roma. Marteau was at his time a famous violinist, a fri=
end of Reger, who composed to him. Like so many others the 5tet is composed=
to M=FChlfeld, who should have played it in Schweitzerland in the summer 1=
907, but who died a few days before. Instead it got its first performance i=
n Sweden the following year. Marteau was present and presumably played the =
viola part. He has a personally, inventive late-romantic style, but the wor=
k lacks unity. The information on Hindemiths last mouvement was good. I sha=
ll try and hear it "backward". Thanks also for suggestion to quartets. The =
Penderecki 4tet is on youtube with beautiful playing by swedish Martin Fr=
=F6st and co.
