Yes, the Bliss quintet is very good and deserves more playing IMO.

This mail is for those of us, who wants to expand our repertoire of
cl.-5tets beyond Mozart, Weber and Brahms. =

A little younger than Mozart, Andreas Romberg (1767-1821) has written a
wonderfull 5tet (op.57). Its on the market in two versions, one with two
violas and one with two violins (the normal 5tet). It=B4s recorded on
Hyperion, CDA66479. On the same CD I=B4ve found a 5tet by austrian Robert
Fuchs (1847-1927). It=B4s nice some places, but I can=B4t help feeling bored
most of the time. Thea King and The Britten String Quartet also plays "Two
Fantasies", late works by C.V. Standford (1852-1924). Both are charming
pieces, and the first should be playable by amateurs. =

More english 5tets: Herbert Howells "Rhapsodic Quintet, op.31, Arnold Cooke
(1906-) Cl-Q, Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994) Cl-Q, and as earlier mentioned
Benjamin Frankel (1906-1973) Cl-Q. And my favorite: Josef Holbrooke
(1878-1958), Eilean Shona, a piece which takes less than 4 min. and which is
extremely beautifull (and perhaps a little to sweet for many?). It=B4s on t=
he
market i a cl-pno version too.

Lawson (in his book on Brahms 5tet) mentions a 5tet by Arthur Bliss as one
of the best after Brahms. Can anybody confirm that statement?

And we should not forget Regers and Hindemiths 5tets. But both are a little
to "closed" (I don=B4t know any better english word for my feeling) for my
taste. Are they therefore seldom heard? Maybe one shall play them to fully
understand them?

Can anybody go on with more 5tets?

b.w. Finn
