Subject: Re: [kl] flat high D
Hi Charlie,
=A0 =A0 I'm a Los Angeles-based woodwind doubler. Over the=A0 years I've sa=
t next =
to or taught many very fine doublers and many not so=A0 fine. Sagging high =
notes and throat tones are a common problem.
=A0 =A0 Many Sax players try to use the same air column and=A0 a similar =
embouchure as they use on their Sax. Also, a big difference is the=A0 mouth=
piece =
angle.
=A0 =A0 As Keith mentioned, a higher tongue position helps.=A0 Think of the =
French pronunciation of "Tu". Make sure to not close the vowel off=A0 with =
an "E" =
sound as most American-English speakers do.
=A0 =A0 Try keeping the clarinet closer to your body. This=A0 helps the =
mouthpiece angle. On Sax, we blow directly into the mouthpiece. On the=A0 =
clarinet, =
think of blowing across the reed and tip rail of the mouthpiece. Oh,=A0 and=
keep =
your head up. The upper/lower teeth position is different between the=A0 tw=
o. =
On clarinet the upper teeth don't go nearly as far from the mouthpiece tip=
=A0 =
as they do on Sax.
=A0 =A0 Play your high D. While holding it, bring the=A0 clarinet closer to=
your =
body and lift your head. While doing this, let the=A0 lower lip go further =
down the reed and the upper teeth come up the mouthpiece=A0 towards the tip=
rail. =
This should also lead you to a more open jaw=A0 position.
=A0 =A0 When you get used to this position, try lifting=A0 your upper teeth=
off =
the mouthpiece to guard against biting (ala Joe Allard).=A0 This is just an =
exercise, not a performance technique.
Good luck,
Phil Feather

My sound is acceptable and in tune, except when I go up to high d.=A0 Then =
it goes =
quite flat.
Any suggestions?=A0 (my mpc and=A0 horn are=A0 ok)
