I think everyone thinks differently about proper embouchure formation - and
it seems we all work toward the same thing. For instance, my teacher
growing up always told me to "point" my chin. According to her, I should
imagine a string attached to the bottom of my chin that pulled it toward the
floor. To do this, I had to practice and build muscle strength in the
corners of my mouth. My current teacher, however, says that I should think
of my embouchure as a drawstring that allows equal pressure on all sides of
my embouchure - to do that, I still have to "point" my chin to even out the
pressure. There's no one correct way to think of it, but steady practice
helps you find the correct embouchure that allows you to play consistently
across the full range of the horn.
