Subj: [kl] Teachers and dismissals
Date: Mon, 11 Jul 2011 15:58:21 -0400

I think it is very important for a teacher to know when to dismiss a
student. Either for the purpose of going to another teacher or for the
purpose of graduating the student to learn on their own as that teacher
understands that the particular student is capable of self-study.

This is essentially what all teachers and professionals do anyway. Teach
themselves through practice, observation, and asking questions.

The best lesson I ever had was when I went for a lesson with a member of the
LA Philharmonic. That person said to me "you have the same problems that I
do, go out and figure them out on your own." "Take a few political lessons
and see if that helps you get a job." The dismissal put the responsibility
on me to learn rather than leaning on the teacher as the solution, and, gave
me an insight on how to let other professionals know how I play.
