C4 or 4C is the commonest Yamaha m/p. Excellent but with a narrow
range of expression. You sound as if you needed a set-up with more
resistance, a 2.5 reed on a Yamaha 4C does not provide this. If it is
a Yamaha 5C, that's OK but I would try a Rico 3 on a Yamaha C4. You
might also look out for a better m/p but that's a whole new ball game!

Sure! It's a Rico Classic 2.5 reed. I have some Vandoren 2.5 here, but
haven't played them yet. I had been playing on some Populaire reeds
(also 2.5 hardness). (I also have a Rico Royal 4 and a Vandoren 4 or 5
that I've had since high school so they're 20 years old, and I figure
they're probably too old to play.)

The mouthpiece is the one that came with my Yamaha wooden clarinet. No
markings other than the fact that it says "Yamaha" on it.

As far as tone, I do know in high school my instructor pushed me toward
the base clarinet, because my air was strong enough to support it.
(How's that for diplomatically saying I'm a loud mouth, haha!).
However, I suspect the thin tone may be because as an adult, I deal with
allergies and breathing problems. I've always sounded buzzy, which may
be again another reason why I was pushed toward the bass clarinet.

Thank you for commenting on the fingerings. One of the "joys" of
fibromyalgia is that my hands don't always want to do what my brain
tells them to. Hence the "fibro version" of Yankee Doodle. The fingers
just wouldn't work that quickly. It's something that I believe will
improve the more I play, because of tying together that part of my
brain.

Would love any suggestions as to reed/mouthpiece. I just started with
2.5 because that's kind of where I left off back in school. I do have
some plain Rico (orange box) 2 and 3, too.
