This seems a bit of an over-generalisation. Like most manufacturers Amati have had bad periods, and being an east european firm can't have helped with their supply problems especially in Iron Curtain days. But I have come across some excellent old Amatis as well as many bad ones; they were terribly inconsistent.
I would say their current models are quite good if you have the chance to pick from several. Remember too that the tonal ideal in Europe is not always that of America.
