String works fine - almost all German clarinettists use it - and to my ear
the sound is better. But it does need the grooved German mouthpiece. It will
slip on a French smooth-finished mouthpiece.

There are also woven string, woven leather and solid 'rings'that you can buy
at great price. So Finn's ideas do not merit a scornful reply.

A clarinet and the reed and velcro come loose and you miss your
entrance. The velcro loosens also and the reed can move. If you
enjoy living dangerously don't waste $10 on a real ligature. You can
also hold your reed on with chewing gum or glue it permanently to the
mouthpiece.

is a bit awkward on-and-off. Later my wife gave me a piece of velcro, and I
made sort of a ring out of it. The size of the ring I made (once for all)
so, that it fits over my mouthpiece with the reed on it, not too tight, not
too slack. It works fine, and I think my tone has become better (I used to
use metalligature earliere). Can anybody tell me, why I should offer 150 $
on an ordinairy ligature, as long as my velcro ring is doing a fine job?
