I got David Pino's book back around 1980 and =
tried the shoestring ligature. I noticed an =
increased resonance in the low notes and =
attribute that to less binding and a more =
flexible binding on the reed (cloth vs metal). I =
have used it ever since and NEVER -NOT ONCE has =
it loosened or let the reed slip- even when =
moving the mouthpiece from clarinet to clarinet.
Over the years I have watched all sorts of =
gimmicky ligatures (and for that matter barrels =
and bells) come to the market. The prices have =
soared and the claims that they make about their =
superiority are absurd. It is a sorry thing that =
catches the gullible. The answer to an improved =
sound is practice practice practice. (Look at =
Stanley Drucker - just an ordinary setup- he is doing OK.)
