Rachel reminds me of an amusing flee market incident at the Porte de Vanves in Paris. The guy had two Buffet Eb clarinets for which he was asking 1200 f when 7 francs were worth a dollar. Both of them appeared to have been left exposed in an attic for a long time and their pads were long gone and all the cork was frayed. One of them had warped slightly so you couldn't see light through the top joint when looking up from the bottom of the bell. How neat it would have been, I kept thinking, to fix up one or both, particularly the warped one, and become the crooked eefer player in the band to which I belong. I told the guy they were both junk but that I'd give him 100 f for them. He didn't like the fact that I didn't want to bargain for his junk.

It's a nice memory, however, of my wonderful trips to Paris.
