He used to play a Hammerschmidt. This one looks like a Selmer simple (not t=
he "improved" albert); I have a very similar instrument (cf. www.youtube.co=
m/watch?v=3DaxRtBbs0988, actually, I even have the same ligature here). Hug=
e tone holes, very awkward to finger, but simply the best tone (through all=
registers) I ever found on any clarinet.
Amazing that Christopher gets such good results with such bad technique. I =
like his very sharp imagination and precise articulation. Very clear cut, v=
ery convincing; even rather hazardous ideas perfectly executed. Unfortunate=
ly, as soon as he plays more than mf the sound starts to turn sour. That ne=
ver happened to Noone or Bigard, sometimes (but not as drastically) to Sime=
on, often to Dodds (who all played Selmer albert). He is probably biting (m=
ost Creole players of the Tio school=96like Bigard=96used double embouchure=
). Or the mouth piece is too short faced.
