I would think it would be quite interesting to know that there are
historical trends at work here, and to take some time to consider why
such a trend would have occurred. What was the cause, what was the effect?

I don't think that's at all true, but even if it were, let us remember
that this is an academic list about the clarinet and clarinet playing.
There is no better forum anywhere in the world to have exactly this kind
of microscopic discussion.

After all, the reason academic debates are so violent is that the stakes
are so low.
