Subj: [kl] Malcolm Arnold, Three Shanties, tempo question
Date: Wed, 15 Jun 2011 14:02:11 -0400

Hello everyone. I have a question about Malcolm Arnold's Three Shanties
for woodwind quintet, first movement, rehearsal letter G in the
Paterson's Publication edition: does the tempo marking read "quarter
note = quarter note", or should it be "quarter note = half note"? The
printing on my part is unclear about this.

If in fact it should be "quarter note = half note", what, then, does
that mean? Does it mean that the old quarter note duration is the same
as the new half note duration, or does it mean that the new quarter note
duration is the same as the old half note duration? Is there a
convention for this sort of thing?

Thanks for your help. ---Richard
