My bass has been placed in all kinds of stands over the years. I've never had a problem using either kind of
stand....and I've never heard of a tendon failing because of pressures associated with the use of a stand. I have seen
soldered joints on bells, peg guides and necks fail (not the fault of stand use, just sloppy work at the factory)....and
more often than I feel acceptable. (Grand Canyon Suite with the bass sitting on a stack of books, or a Wager opera with
the neck being held together with gaffers tape) :-)

I'm with Keith on the use of a stand. It's not a good idea to place the clarinet on a case. 1st, it's hard to get to if
you have to change from clarinet/bass, water issues, etc. 2nd, during breaks, it's just as much "at risk" on the floor
as in the stand. While working you won't have traffic through your work area and since you're right there you have
control of the area = safe. If you are worried about the safety of the instrument during breaks, just take it off the
stand and move it to a safe environment.
