Hercules actually makes two bass clarinet stands. Their newer model is as
you describe, very much like the K&M in operation. The original model
(still for sale) does in fact hold the instrument by the bell; see

399.wwbw for a picture. This is the stand that I use and I've not had any
problems with the lower tenon. There has been a problem with the tenon
between the upper and lower joints, but an experienced tech said this is
endemic to the Buffet low C instrument.
