I've always used a patch, but only to protect my mouthpiece. My set-up is a
Backun Eb mouthpiece and Backun tulipwood Eb barrel, Backun tulipwood bell,
BG Super Revelation ligature, #3 reeds (German-style, or Bb reeds). I have
no difficulty getting to altissimo G (no biting...lots of air).

When choosing my set-up, it helped greatly to have Morrie Backun sitting
there listening to help with product choices. Make sure your clarinet is in
good playing condition, and properly voiced. Using Peter Hadcock's book
will help tremendously (at least it did for me).

One final comment...the choice of mouthpiece, barrel, and bell is a very
personal one. Spend the time trying many different product lines until you
find what works for you. I also had very good response with Lomax
products. I still am looking for a good "wooden" Eb mouthpiece.
