I made a harness from an old car seat belt before they were available
commercially which I prefer to the boughten ones. I play a low A
baritone and find it essential. I only use a strap for bass clarinet,
but I'm sure that for the heavier instruments a harness is better for
your back. Mine is designed to have two adjustments: one for total
length over the shoulders and another for height of the instrument
hook. The commercial ones are different but I imagine effective.
