If it is straight, it is most likely a Bb soprano clarinet. If the top
piece has a single curve, it is most probably an alto clarinet in Eb. With
an S-shaped neck, it is a bass (in Bb in all likelihood). Bb soprano
clarinets of that era frequently do have adjustable barrels as you describe.
Is the instrument marked with a maker's name? That is usually on the bell,
and will do a lot to determine the value of the instrument. In any case, a
properly set up metal clarinet will sound just like a wood or plastic one.
