Dear forum members,

I am writing my dissertation on Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat trio and was wondering whether some of you may be able to help. As you may know, the Italian clarinetist, Edmondo Allegra premiered the work. He later played in the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1925-1939. He was also the clarinetist that premiere Stravinsky's Three Pieces.

I have searched the clarinet forum and have read that many Italian clarinetists played on the full Boehm Bb clarinet and often transpose their music. In the second movement of the trio, there was a chalumeau low Eb note not possible on regular Boehm clarinet. Perhaps Allegra was able play this note if he was playing on a full Boehm clarinet? The issue is that the second movement was written for the A clarinet. Was the full Boehm A clarinet popular with the Italians or the Swiss (since the premiere was in Switzerland).
