Keith, I wonder what your objective is in reading the critical commentary
for the NMA edition of K. 622.
The reason for my inquiry is that I have given several lectures entitled,
"Abandon Ye All Hope of Ever Getting an Authentic Edition of the Mozart
Clarinet Concerto." It is technically and historically impossible to state
that the NMA edition adheres to Mozart text either in intent or in
notes/dynamics/phrasing, etc. It is an edition that is cobbled together with
love, but not with authority. For example, where do the basset notes come
in? There are probably 20 ways to address that matter.
The work was so grossly modified at the time of the first printing of 1803
that there is no way to go backwards so as to achieve Mozart's text, and
that also applies to the orchestral accompaniment, though to a considerably
lesser degree.
So if you were able to have an English translation of the editor's critical
commentary, you would not find that he based his decisions on anything
authentic (beyond the fragmentary autograph for basset horn in GO, and that
is only a part of the first movement in any case). What the editor did was
to create an edition that he thought was nice and as authentic as he could
make it.
You can probably do just as well as he by making your own edition. It won't
any better or any worse than the NAME, but it will be your ideas.
If you want to get a reasonably good idea of what happened to the concerto,
get my fiction novel, "The Mozart Forgeries." Even though it is fiction, it
gives you the entire story of how the concerto got so screwed up that it
cannot find its way back to what it was when Mozart finished it. Buy the
book from Amazon.com. You can even get a previously read copy
inexpensively.
What you are trying to do has been the goal of almost every serious clarinet
player who ever lived, and the task has never been accomplished or will it
be.
Sorry to be such a wet blanket, but it would be more productive of your time
if you planted soy beans.
