A cursory check in Wikipedia states Prokofiev's opera War and Peace was
written in 1942.

Although as Mr Pay states that the sonata should stand on its own, if
Prokofiev did borrow from the opera, I would certain listen to the it to
inform my understand. I'm sure many musicians would do the same.
