From: K S <krsmav@-----.com> Subj: [kl] Prokofiev Sonata Op. 94 Date: Sat, 26 Mar 2011 16:31:42 -0400
In Fanfare Magazine 22:5 (5-6/99), p. 313, David Denton wrote that the
Prokofiev flute sonata was written at the same time as War and Peace
and is full of quotations from it. Listening to the opera is
essential to understanding the vocal nature of the sonata phrasing,
and the word settings show where to breathe.
Larry Combs played the Kennan transcription at the 1985 Clarinet
Congress in Oberlin. I thought it was a failure. He of course had no
difficulty playing the notes, but no clarinet has the ease and
sweetness in the extreme high register that comes naturally to the
flute (or violin). On the flute it's silver. On the clarinet it's
iron.
