Hello Nancy,

I know. I played most German models, some French and several "historic" horns. Original bassetti always seem to have the basset keys for the right thumb. If there are four it is quite a nuisance, but you don't have to finger those notes fast.
I like it that way. The man who restores my clarinets once was asked to realign the basset keys of a Buffet basset clarinet for the little fingers of both hands, on top of the regular keys. Unbelievable work. The owner (some nut) decided not to pick up the horn, it is still in the workshop after many years. It is a useless monster.
2 basset keys would do for me anyway.

As far as composers I have not seen clarinet (let alone basset horn) writing to match that of Mendelssohn or Brahms. People like Backofen, Starck or Mueller knew how to handle the horn but their compositional capacity was clearly not quite up to the set standard. What works do you have in mind specifically?

Best regards
danyel
