I would hope that it would sound better on an alto clarinet if written for
an alto clarinet, and on a basset horn if written for a basset horn!

The Piazzola quartets are examples of ones which I think sound better on the
basset horn.

I have recently started an occasional clarinet quartet group and will try
out your piece at our next rehearsal, in about a month. I always like to
encourage basset horn composers!

Keith,
I remember a CASS 'playday' where we played the same quartet movement with
both Eb Alto and Basset-horn, parts being published for both. The difference
in sound was surprising and it was the general opinion that the Eb worked
better.
