I've never seen tenor or alto clefs used in clarinet writing of any sort.
When the bass clarinet (when written in bass clef) goes high, treble clef is
used not tenor or alto.

You do still have to figure out the pitch, since German notation for bass
clarinet uses treble (and bass) clef at sounding pitch (less the Bb or A
transposition), whereas French uses treble an octave higher. And Russian
usually uses German bass and French treble!

When basset horn is written in bass clef, it is normally written an octave
(less the transposition) lower than sounding. The bottom note of the basset
horn is the written C on second space of the bass clef, sounding F just
below the bottom of the bass stave (an octave and a bit below middle C). The
Mozart parts to which Dan referred are written an octave below this. This
has the merit that the part is read and fingered the same way as a bass
clarinet with low C extension.

Clear as mud? Well, you can write the score however you like, it's your
piece. Most players will curse you over the alto clef, though.

YEs! it did answer my question. I'm so glad you brought up the fact it goes
to low C!!!! Even though I know that, I somehow forgot and was writing as
if it could only go to E. Now I can do all kinds of crossing between the
bass clarinet and basset horn and with the basset horn and 1st and 2nd
clarinets.

So then.. is it ever a common practice to use tenor or alto clefs? This is
just a thought... I think it would look nice to see 2 treble clefs, an alto
clef, and a bass clef as if I was writing a string quartet. I could always
do that for the look of the score and then make the actual individual part
the correct clefs.

Thanks

Tom
