Same here. I get an aching back if I sit on the edge of the chair. I
practice both standing and sitting, on alternate days, because I don't want
to train my muscles to be able to play only one way. But when I sit to play
clarinet, I use the back of the chair for support.
Two exceptions: for practicing contra-alto clarinet while seated, I use a
drummer's throne, a stool with no back. That's because I'm "vertically
challenged" and I don't have a chair that's exactly the right height for me
reach the mouthpiece and all the keys at the same time! For the same
reason, I can only practice the bass saxophone while standing up. If I
played that in a group, I'd have to stand in the back with the bass fiddle
players and the percussion. Jane Feline doesn't seem to give half a squeak,
but a conductor might....
