Subj: [kl] update on Bill Douglas commission
Date: Wed, 02 Mar 2011 15:08:50 -0500

Dear Colleagues,

The Bill Douglas flute/oboe/clarinet/bassoon commission project is in full =
swing. I've talked to Bill and he is very pleased with how the piece is co=
ming together. He expects to have the project done by May 15th. We have =
a number of groups and individuals from around the U.S. and Canada signed =
on. However, we're still in need of additional commissioners to meet Bill's=
commission fee and copying costs.

If you or your group are interested, please let me know and I'll add you to=
the list. If you aren't interested but still know someone who might be, I=
'd certainly appreciate it if you could forward this message to as many pla=
yers as possible. Thanks again for reading this! I'll put the details of t=
he commission below.

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to let all of you know of a new commissioning project for 2011=
with composer, bassoonist, and pianist Bill Douglas. I am spearheading th=
e project to have Bill write a quartet for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoo=
n.

The work will have 4 movements, and be approximately 14 minutes in duration=
. The flavor of the work will be in his usual style of long, lyrical, sing=
ing lines influenced by Bach, lyrical jazz, African, Brazilian, Celtic, Ren=
aissance music, etc.

In the past few years, Bill has been commissioned to write several major wo=
rks for woodwinds including the =93Partita for Bassoon and Piano=94, =93Son=
gs and Dances for Flute, Bassoon, and Piano=94, =93Lyric Suite for Contraba=
ssoon and Piano=94, =93Suite Cantando for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano=94, =
=93Suite Cantabile for Woodwind Quintet=94, =93Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and =
Piano=94, =93Celebration V for Bassoon and Strings=94, =93Songs and Dances =
for Oboe and Strings=94, =93Celebration IV for Flute and Piano=94, "Quartet=
for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano", and =93Trio No. 2 for Clarinet, Bass=
oon, and Piano=94. These have been performed many times around the world.

With this new project, commissioners will have a chance to be part of the c=
reation of a major new chamber-music work and be recognized in the score fo=
r their contribution.

The fee to join this project is $75 per commissioner. All participants wou=
ld be listed on the title page as contributors with their affiliation; they=
also will receive a set of parts and score, as well as a recording of the =
piece on sampled instruments. All participants would have a one-year exclu=
sivity agreement on performances before the piece is made available for the=
general public. Participants may share the cost of the commission, but fo=
r each $75 submitted, only one score and set of parts will be sent out. Be=
sure to let me know if you are sharing.

Once we get a number of people signed up, Bill would anticipate completing =
the quartet by May, 2011. When the work is completed, I will notify all of =
the commissioners and at that point, they can send the commission fee direc=
tly to Bill.
